Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Assessment and Health Check
What is an MEL Health Check?
An MEL Health Check is an expert guided review of your existing MEL system capacity and processes to better understand where you and your organisation are in your overall MEL journey, identify any key gaps and recommend an Impact Measurement strategy that is consistent and proportionate to your available time and resources.
It results in a “Red, Amber, Green (RAG)” rated summary report highlighting key findings, potential areas for improvement and immediate priorities for you to address.
Why should I get an MEL Health Check?
An MEL Health Check will provide a clear outline of the areas of your processes which may need improving, and any existing gaps. The check will also provide suggestions on next steps to develop your MEL processes further.
What does the MEL Health Check cover?
Tailored to your needs, the MEL Health Check could be directed towards your organisation as a whole, or more towards a particular project or programme you run. It covers all 12 steps in the inFocus IMM process, but might have a particular emphasis in any one of the following areas:
- A review of your individual or organisational capacity and current skill set to carry out MEL
- A focused analysis of your current Theory of Change and MEL framework.
- A review of your current data collection processes and how they could be refined and further improved.
- An assessment of how you report or communicate data and impact, and the ways you could enhance this for better results and/or for different audiences.
What does an MEL Health Check involve?
The MEL Health Check will involve four key stages:
- Book an initial 20 minute ‘Health Check-in’ (below). We do this to ensure it is the right approach for you. If it isn’t what you need, then no-one wastes any more time! If it is, then we kick-off the rest of the assessment process right away!
- Complete a brief online survey to help us to understand your current MEL processes.
- Send any existing key MEL documents to the inFocus team.
- Complete a short follow-up interview with a member of the inFocus team to fill out the picture and provide any other necessary information.
That’s all you’ll need to do! We’ll complete the assessment by sending you a final MEL Health Check Report that includes a RAG rating and clear recommendations for improvement to enhance your MEL processes, including sign-posting to any CIM resources that we think will help you.
